CHARTER STANDARD

Brighouse Town

Brighouse Town FC have become one of the latest clubs to receive the FA Charter Standard Club Adult award.  County's Jo de Tute can be seen above presenting the club with the award.

The club was formed in 1963 as a representative side of the Blakeborough Valve Company of Brighouse and played on the Woodhouse Recreation Ground, competing in the Huddersfield Works League.  The club gained various league honours over the years, the most successful coming in the 1968/69 season when they won both the League Cup as well as the Halifax Cup.

Following this success they took the huge step of obtaining their own ground at Hove Edge.  The club played at Green Lane for more than a decade until the area was developed for housing and they moved to their present ground, just round the corner, in Saint Giles Road .

Whilst at Green Lane they achieved two more league titles before taking another major step in applying for and achieving West Riding Company Amateur League status in 1975.  there followed a period of stagnation competing mainly in the lower divisions of the WRCAL until in 1988 when, at the demise of the Blakeborough Company, the club was forced to find outside finance to survive.  The club was not without friends, however, as new funds were injected which resulted in a new outlook as well as a new name.  Thus commenced the most successful period in the club’s history so far.

Promotion to the premier division was gained in the first season as well as winning the Division One Cup.  In 1991 the Premier Division Championship was won and in 1992 the County Cup .  In 1994 Town won the Premier Division League Cup and were runners up in the County Cup , losing to Tyersal 1-0 after a replay and were Premiers Division Champions again in 1995.

Season 1995/96 was the most successful season in the club’s history.  Brighouse again won the WRCAL premiership title and completed the double by winning the League Cup.  They also won the Bob Wedgeworth Memorial Trophy but lost in the Halifax FA Cup Final on penalties.

1996/97 promised great things but they fell away towards the end of the season.  they reached the WRCAL Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Storthes Hall.
