Ability Counts League

Following the Christmas break the West Riding Ability County FA Ability Counts Fixture got back into full swing on Sunday 7th February with the Goals Football Centre (Bradford) playing host.

Having had just over a month off over the Christmas Period all both players and managers were in high spirits and focused on getting their teams’ campaign back on track for the penultimate fixture of the 2009/10 programme.

Over the first two fixtures all teams had given an accomplished account of them and entering Round 3 the Novice & Lower Novice tables were as below.

As expected the first fixtures in both the Novice and Lower Novice Divisions were slow to warm up following the extended break and the typical February temperatures. Once the fire had been re-kindled the games became evermore competitive with a number of ‘tasty’ encounters firstly between Wakefield Autism A & Bradford A in which a closely contested game finished in a 4-1 win to the Wakefield side.

The second fixture was an end-to-end affair between Thorne Warriors of Doncaster and eventual winners, and the Pontefract Pirates ‘A team’, a team that included Gary Hope who recently attended the Mencap National Trials, and who, along with 3 other players from the West Riding Ability Counts League will be representing Mencap in Genève at the European Football Tournament in May.

The other players from the West Riding are Scott Johnson of Bradford DFC, Edward Black of Harrogate Gateway DFC & Richard Dutton or Pudsey Gateway DFC. The guys will meet for a weekend training camp in Yorkshire on the 30th April to 2nd May to prepare the squad for the event, and will fly to Geneva on Thursday 20th May 2010, returning on Monday 24th. The West Riding FA would like to wish our county representatives and their team mates the best of luck in their conquest to become European champions in 2010.

From a development perspective one of the most pleasing aspect of the event was the number of U16 players that attended to take part in some structured coaching activity led by Chris Dixon of Killinghall Nomads JDFC. Chris and a couple of volunteer coaches led a number of coaching activities and small sided games for around 20 players in the U16 age banding. James Doyle, the WRCFA’s Disability Football Development Officer commented “its always encouraging to see any new players involved in the league activity but to have so many juniors attending means that our aim of a junior league structure for the 2010/11 season is a real possibility” he added, “we are hoping to increase the number of U16’s attending the final fixture in Leeds and will be working with the existing teams to develop regular activities for these players in the closed season”.

Unfortunately, and to the disappointment of all involved Leeds United’s Ability Counts team were unable to attend the Bradford fixture which resulted in a number of games being incomplete, but rest assured United will be back to compete in the last event of the season when the Goals Centre (Leeds) will once again be the focus!!!!
