Wakefield Supports Week of Action

 
Wakefield Positive Futures Sports Project ,which is managed by Nacro the crime reduction charity, supported the F.A's Kick it Out  “Week Of Action” by holding a football tournament in conjunction with Wakefield City Council.

The tournament, which took place at Wakefield City High Community Sports Centre on Tuesday October 23rd, was attended by young people from Lupset, Eastmoor, Knottingley and Hemsworth.

Wakefield Positive Futures Sports Project was funded by the Football Foundation in 2006 and operates in partnership with the Wakefield Youth Offending Team, Community Safety Partnership, Turning Point, Sport and Recreation, Police, County FA and the Voluntary Sector.

 
Gareth Hamlet, Wakefield Positive Futures Sports Co-ordinator said.
“The tournament offers the young people the chance to play and learn at the same time. The Kick It Out campaign is one we support every year as we feel there is a need for the young people of Wakefield to have a chance to show they support of such a great campaign. Tackling issues surrounding racism through sport is a great way for the young people to learn and make Wakefield a better place”.
 
Young people in Wakefield can access information on positive activities in their local area through www.wakiesworld.com, which has been put together by Wakefield Youth Development and Support Service.

Positive Futures is an intervention scheme, which targets young people aged between 10 and 19 years. Sport is used as an engagement tool to help improve young people’s lives.

The Wakefield Positive Futures Sports Project has four target areas these are:

  • Lupset
  • Eastmoor
  • Hemsworth
  • Knottingley

Sessions are delivered weekly in the targeted communities by sports coaches who deliver sessions in various sports. Workshops on health, fitness, drugs awareness, sexual education and the consequences of crime are also delivered. Young people are also offered opportunities to gain sports qualifications and accreditations from the project.

The Wakefield Positive Futures Sports Project aims to:

  • Encourage the target communities to play sport together.
  • Increase participation in sport by young people.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles and reduce risk-taking behaviours.
  • Support young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds to increase their education attainments and raise personal aspirations.
  • Offer young people the chance to gain accreditation and qualifications.
  • Encourage young people to continue their sporting interests with clubs, teams and groups.
  • Create a variety of positive activities for the young people.
