Out of School Hours

What is Out-of-School hours learning (OSHL) ?
OSHL is a learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily. Its purpose is to improve young people’s motivation, build their self-esteem and help them to become more effective learners. OSHL activities are free of charge for the participant.

When should it take place ?
OSHL can include any activity, which aims to raise achievement, as long as it takes place before or after school, during the lunch hour, at weekends or during the holidays. However, to achieve its full potential OSHL should be linked to the curriculum provision and part of a planned whole school development and improvement.

How does it work ?

The programme will initially run until the end of July 2006 in line with the FA Sponsors programme

Partnership Development Managers will have the responsibility to submit implementation plans for their Partnership. The target is 5,000 schools (30% of each SSP Primary and Special schools). PDM’s are to ensure they engage the LEA in the process and as a minimum they are required to counter sign off the plan.

The Football Development Officers and County Partnership Managers will also have a role to play in ensuring that the OSHL football programmes supports and compliments the FA School Club Link plans and therefore will also have to counter sign the plan before it is submitted nationally.

The final plan has to be submitted by the PDM by the 25th February 2005

What FREE package will the Schools receive ?

Each school will receive an equipment package consisting of 10 footballs, a set of markers, a pump, a set of bibs and a ball bag.

£100 will be available to each school to support them to buy in coaches to assist in the delivery of the programme.

Each School will receive an FA OSHL football manual including OSHL football curriculum’s developed by practising teachers and an OSHL LEA officer.

Schools will be required to submit order forms against their implementation plan in order to access resources.

How will the FA support coaches working on the programme ?

The FA has developed and is due to pilot an OSHL training course for coaches

The FA will nationally coordinate and run a minimum of 50 training courses to train 1,000 coaches per annum to support the programme

Each school will receive the FA OSHL football manual

The FA will support Partnerships to identify coaches and assist in making links to FitC schemes

Developing the programme:

The FA National Faculty group and FA Staff have been involved in writing the OSHL curriculum’s and assisted in the development and piloting of the training courses for coaches working with young people with low physical literacy and another to work with young people with disabilities

Partnerships are of course free to work with other target groups and use their own curriculum’s

Jancis Walker the Youth Sport Trust OSHL Manager has provided continued advice and support in developing the programme
