Football Focus for Flaxley Road

SELBY COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL provided the venue for a football coaching and competition day as part of the ‘Flaxley Road Matters’ scheme.

The project brings together Selby District Council, the Selby Association of Voluntary Services, the Extended Schools Cluster, Selby College, the Selby and York Primary Care Trust, and  the West Riding FA all of whom contributed to the event, which aims to increase and improve community relations in the Flaxley Road area of Selby

County Football Development Officer's Nicola Copley pictured above (back left) and Nikki Copeland (4th left back row) were on hand to provide kit and equipment and help out with coaching.

In addition to footballing sessions for the youngsters, workshops were held to encourage parents to get involved by training to become referee's, coaches or volunteers

Deputy Leader of Selby District Council Cllr. Wally Norton, said:   “I’m sure the football day will be a lot of fun for everyone involved, but there is also a serious message behind why we’re doing this.  Evidence shows that by engaging with residents and working alongside people to provide the leisure activities they want, we can help to enhance community life.
“This is a great example of how organisations can work together for the benefit of communities; one of the key priorities of the Local Strategic Partnership.  It’s part of the on-going ‘Flaxley Road Matters’ project, which works to enhance the Flaxley Road area.
“The football events will help to encourage young people to keep fit and healthy and provide youngsters and their parents with access to good quality coaching and sports facilities.”

It is expected that similar events will be held during the Easter Holidays.
