The tuition sessions contain not just the teaching of the Laws
but also lots of practical advice to help potential candidates in the
very early stages of their careers. Given the intensity of this
course, all necessary booklets and course information is sent to those
candidates whose applications have been successful prior to its
commencement to allow them time to read up on the basics.

|
Introduction
Evening
|
|
|
This is the time when all the necessary paperwork is completed
(CRB forms and registration documents etc.) and candidates are
introduced to course staff as well hearing from current, active
referees of all levels, what they think about refereeing. There is
also an opportunity for the instructional team to find out what the
candidates know about the Laws of Association Football, as a
multi-choice test-paper is completed and marked on the night. Finally,
the last of the course materials are presented with an outline of how
the course will be run, and what is expected of the candidates.

Safeguarding
Children Workshop
|
|
|
This aspect of the course is mandatory, as it is the Football
Association’s aim to ensure all possible steps are taken to
protect the most vulnerable people within society. For those
candidates who may have had or continue to have involvement with
junior football and already possess a valid Certificate obtained
through the FA, dispensation is given and attendance at this
workshop is not required.

Saturday
Tuition
|
|
|
The emphasis is placed upon re-enforcement of knowledge as it
is impossible to expect a candidate to learn and understand all the
Laws of Association Football in a single weekend!
|
|
|
|
|
|
Having received a copy of the Laws booklet prior to the course
starting, a few good reads through will allow the instructors to build
on the knowledge each candidate has been able to absorb and clarify
any points on which they are concerned. The more the candidates
understand beforehand, the easier their learning will be during the
tuition sessions.
|
|
|
|
|
|
We try to use on-field training as much as possible and build
in practical elements of refereeing to equip candidates with the
necessary skills needed to referee a game. Knowledge of the Laws is
essential, but knowing how to be in the right place at the right time
to recognise an offence and whether or not to allow advantage should
the opportunity arise must also be taught.

Sunday
Tuition & Examination
|
|
|
Following
a full day of practical instruction it’s pretty much the same again
on Sunday with the added input of how to complete misconduct report
forms. There’s also a two-part examination to complete once all
instruction is finished. Candidates must achieve a minimum of 75%
overall to progress to the next stage.

Refereeing
Six Games of 11 v 11 football
|
|
|
Having
completed all the required training, the real learning starts with
each candidate undertaking the actual refereeing of games. As well as
being armed with all their newly acquired knowledge and skills,
candidates are also registered level 9 referees, so have the full
support of the Football Association behind them. In some respects
becoming to be a referee is like driving a car – once the test has
been passed, learning through practical experience of live situations
provides much more development opportunities. Fortunately, their
instructors are only a phone call away to offer the necessary guidance
and support essential for all new referees.

Call-Back
Evening
|
|
|
Ten or 12 weeks after the completion of the tuition stage
there’s an in-service training evening where any problems that may
have arisen can be discussed and solutions offered. The sharing of
this information may help another candidate should they face the same
or a similar issue in the future. The Instructional team deliver two
key training topics addressing those problems typically faced by new
referees before the formal presentation of Certificates.

FAMOA
Badge & Incentive Scheme
|
|
|
After
refereeing 6 games, a simple to complete form is returned to the
County
FA
. A
badge with its famous three-lions emblem, easily recognised not just
in
England
but
around many parts of the world, is sent by the FA. to the successful
candidate to be worn with pride on their uniform.
