PENALTY HEARTBREAK !

The West Riding County F.A. Under 16 side went down on penalties in the Midlands Counties Youth League Cup Final played at Holmes Park Whetstone, the home of Leicestershire & Rutland F.A.

Just three weeks ago, the West Riding had won here by 2 goals to 1 in a League game but this meant nothing as both teams were evenly matched and a close game was envisaged.

As expected, Leicestershire came out of the blocks fast and the pressure was on for the first 20 minutes.  While the visiting defence dealt admirably with the threat, at the other end, Jordan Magee was always going to struggle to create any chances as a lone striker.

Goalminder James Hamer was in great form and, when the home side did break through, the West Riding keeper dealt with everything that came his way

Although it was probably no more than the home side deserved it seemed that the Referee was a little hard when he awarded the kick for a foul by the keeper, when it seemed at first that Hamer was the one who got fouled.   Fortune was with the West Riding, however, and the Leicestershire striker hit his shot against the cross bar and the ball was cleared to safety

Leicestershire took the lead in the 71st minute when a player cut in from the right along the edge of the penalty area and for the first time the visitors defence appeared motionless as the shot found its way into the net.

The Management team of Mark Swales and Andrew Shuttleworth made two substitutions after the break with Nathan Thomas and Jordan Walker coming on to help the ever-willing Magee in attack and the move helped turn the game in West Riding's favour.

With the influential, graceful and, at times, dominant Dominic Boulton in midfield, the visitors began to take control and, with steadier finishing, could have levelled the scores on at least three occasions but, with the final whistle approaching fast, Leicestershire's single strike looked like being the winner until a hand ball in the penalty area gave West Riding the lifeline they were looking for.

Anthony Booth gratefully accepted the chance and duly dispatched the spot kick to take the game into extra time.

Although both sides had good chances, both keepers were equal to the test and with no further goals after extra time, the result would be decided on penalties.

The standard of penalty taking was exemplary, each of the first 10 (5 per side) were brilliantly taken with neither keeper standing any chance at all.

Sudden death now came into play and, sadly for West Riding, the home keeper made a brilliant save to give Leicestershire the Cup.

The West Riding, who have had a fine season, went away with no trophies but with a great deal of credit.

The West Riding penalty shoot out scorers were Anthony Booth, Scott Driscoll, Leo Driscoll, Nathan Thomas and Jordan Walker.
