After using their 'get out of jail' card to scrape a
narrow win against Cheshire in the previous round, West Riding powered
into the last eight of the County Youth Cup with a comfortable win over
Surrey |
|

The 220 mile journey and overnight stay on the outskirts
of Leeds clearly didn't agree with the visitors who never got into gear
against the cup holders. |

Both sides looked cautious in the opening encounters but
with Sam Rushworth, Jonny Stripe, Joshua Hope and Luke Craven repelling
any Surrey threat, the home mid-field began to look more comfortable and
started to concentrate their efforts on attack |

Luke Gibson and Darrel Lucas made some excellent runs down
the flanks and Lucas, Edwards, and Miller all went close but West Riding
were unable to make the breakthrough and the score remained 0-0 at half
time. |

|
West Riding started the second half with mid-field general Paddy Miller
controlling play and, after 15 minutes of dogged resistance the Surrey defence
finally cracked leaving Marcus Edwards with just the keeper to beat from 15
yards and the dependable striker calmly slotted the ball into he bottom corner
.

|
|
A defensive mix up, five minutes later, allowed West Riding to double their
advantage when Edwards took advantage to score his seventh, and easiest, goal
of the campaign into an empty net.
|
|
|
|
|
|
This was not a vintage display by the cup holders but the fact that keeper
Jonathan Gardiner was a virtual spectator for much of the game is testament to
West Riding's dominance.
